Meet the IFOPA's New Research Director

Mark Hamilton, PhD, is uniquely equipped to build a research strategy to fulfill our strategic plan

We hope you were able to join one of our recent Fireside Chat presentations, where IFOPA Board and staff leaders shared the IFOPA's 2025-28 strategic plan. One of the three goals of that plan is to "capitalize on existing momentum to continue to drive scientific advancement for FOP care and treatment." In support of our work to achieve this goal, we are pleased to announce the hiring of IFOPA's new Research Director, Mark Hamilton, PhD.

Mark will be pivotal to advancing the IFOPA's mission and vision, and growing our key partnerships with scientists, healthcare providers, and drug developers.

Mark brings decades of experience in academia and the pharmaceutical industry. Throughout his career, he’s focused on how changes in the biochemical processes and pathways that control gene expression can alter cell behavior and lead to the development and progression of disease. Prior to joining IFOPA, Mark was responsible for developing and managing key translational research programs and initiatives at the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

“I consider myself very fortunate that my career as a research scientist has allowed me the opportunity to experience research across different professional environments and fields of interest, spanning academic, industry and nonprofit organizations involved in cancer, rare disease research, and drug discovery,” he says.

Mark’s background in drug discovery and development gives him unique insight into the urgency of FOP research. In his role with the IFOPA, Mark is excited to continue building research programs and partnerships that will bring us one step closer to multiple approved treatments and, one day, a cure.

“I am hopeful that the new therapies currently in the clinic will be life-changing for FOP patients and their families,” he says.

Mark received his bachelor’s and PhD at the University of Glasgow in Scotland, and he currently lives in Connecticut. We’re excited for him to join our team, and we’re confident he will be an energetic advocate on behalf of you and your loved ones!

Stay tuned for opportunities to hear from Mark during our In Pursuit of a Cure Day of Giving campaign, which launches August 1.
