Turn your car into hope: One mother’s story behind her vehicle donation

For Megan Olsen, donating her old car to the IFOPA just made sense.

She drove her station wagon for years, passed it on to her daughter, and then . . . it sat around. As soon as she heard about Cars2CureFOP, a donation program that funds research and provides education and support to the FOP community, she reached out.

“It was super easy,” she remembers. “I called them up, they did an intake form, and organized a tow truck to pick it up. Then, it went to auction, and I received the tax deduction receipt.”

Megan is a longtime member of the FOP community and mom to Hayden, her son, who was diagnosed with FOP in 2002 and passed on August 6, 2024.

Megan and Hayden experienced many meaningful memories in the car. They would take scenic drives over Northern California’s Marin Headlands that overlook the ocean before getting lunch or cruise up Tunnel Road to see the view of U.C. Berkeley (where he became an architectural student) and the East Bay.

They also took road trips that combined his love of gaming and family. They visited Seattle twice for The International, a gaming event; Los Angeles for E3, a gaming convention; and San Diego to visit his sister.

Hayden loved cars. Megan laughs, remembering a Ferrari car rally he attended as a young boy, and the time a friend took Hayden for the fastest ride of his life in a Lamborghini. “I ended up being so glad that car only had two seats, and I couldn’t be there!”

Donating her car to support the IFOPA mission was a simple, practical way to give back to the nonprofit organization that has been such an important part of her life.

“Know that you’re making a difference, no matter how small,” Megan shares with anyone considering donating to the IFOPA, vehicle or otherwise. “The IFOPA is near and dear to my heart. Those are my people — I support them. I can’t imagine if the cure came, what that would mean.”
