Supporting Independence: The L.I.F.E. Awards Applications Are Open

For many people living with FOP, small adaptations can make a big difference in daily life. A wheelchair that improves mobility. Specialized utensils that support independence when eating. Equipment that eases pain and makes everyday activities more manageable.

That’s exactly why the Harold and Elaine Kaplan Quality of L.I.F.E. Awards exist.

The L.I.F.E. Awards provide grants to help individuals living with FOP obtain products or services that improve their quality of life. Launched in 2003, L.I.F.E. stands for Living Independently with Full Equality, the core value of the program.

Every person living with FOP is eligible to apply for up to $1,800 USD during their lifetime, and applications are accepted twice a year. The next application period is now open for the entire month of July. Apply here.

Precious's Story

One recent L.I.F.E. Award recipient, Precious Harrison of Enugu State, Nigeria, knows firsthand what a difference this support can make.

“These items have changed my daily life by reducing my dependence on others for basic activities,” Precious shares. “I can do more things on my own, with dignity and comfort.”

Before receiving her L.I.F.E. Award, Precious often relied on others for mobility and struggled with chronic pain and discomfort. Standing for long periods caused severe swelling in her legs. She carried a mat with her so she could lie down when pain became overwhelming. Even simple activities, such as preparing meals or reaching everyday items, presented challenges.

After applying for the L.I.F.E. Award earlier this year, Precious received approval for several items, including a wheelchair, a reacher, specialized silverware, and an orthopedic mattress.

“With my wheelchair, I can now move freely around my compound,” she says. “I can also move around church after service, and even at conferences and seminars, I can stay longer and interact with people. Honestly, it made me feel alive.

The reacher and long-handled utensils have also allowed her to eat more independently. “I can now take food from the pot safely. With the long spoon, I can feed myself independently.”

Beyond the physical benefits, Precious says the award helped restore her sense of possibility.

“I am no longer just managing pain,” she said. “I am making choices, taking action, and actively building my future.”

For those considering applying, Precious shares, “Be patient and stay hopeful. Once your application is approved, the award will reach you.”

If a piece of equipment, adaptive device, or service could help improve your quality of life, we encourage you to apply.

About the L.I.F.E. Awards

Awards can be used to purchase adaptive equipment, for example, a toilet riser, shower chair, or long-handled brush. Awards can also be used towards home modifications such as a wheelchair ramp or a bathroom remodel. In certain instances, the award can be used towards tuition.

  • Anyone living with FOP, anywhere in the world, is eligible to apply.

  • All application materials can be translated and completed in any language.

  • Applications are reviewed and voted on by a committee composed of individuals living with FOP and FOP parents. The IFOPA staff does not determine which applications are approved.
