See how a wheelchair has transformed daily life for Karina.
Two years ago, Karina, who lives in Poland, lost the ability to walk and has relied on an assistant to push her wheelchair at school.
She couldn’t reach for a book from a shelf, switch classes with her peers, or even get a snack from the vending machine by herself. As a 17-year-old high school student, she has missed the independence she used to enjoy before her fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) symptoms progressed.
This year, Karina was a recipient of a Harold and Elaine Kaplan Quality of L.I.F.E. Award, allowing her family to complete the purchase of an electric wheelchair. Now, she can confidently attend school and live more independently without the help of an assistant!
"We are incredibly grateful for your generous donation," Kasia, Karina's mother, said. "The electric wheelchair has brought so much joy to Karina. This has truly been a life-changing gift for her, allowing her to experience life with greater independence and comfort. Thanks to you, she is now brighter, happier, and more mobile than ever before. Your support has made a profound impact on her life, and for that, we cannot thank you enough."
Since 2003, the L.I.F.E. Awards program has given grants to individuals with FOP to purchase items that improve daily living and support independence.
In the past 20+ years, we have helped individuals around the world purchase a wide variety of adaptive equipment — from standing desks and tablets to shower tools and oral hygiene products.
The L.I.F.E. Awards program is one of the most direct, life-changing ways the IFOPA comes alongside individuals and families to improve daily life.
Thanks to your generosity, we can support individuals like Karina and make sure she has the tools she needs to live well!
We are deeply appreciative of your support; your donation to the IFOPA has a lasting impact on people around the world!
