Chances are you've never heard of Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). FOP is one of the rarest, most disabling genetic diseases known to medicine affecting approximately 1 in every 1 million. There are no ethnic, racial or gender patterns and based on the world's current population, there should be around 7,000 living with FOP. There are currently only 900 confirmed cases worldwide.
Because FOP is so rare, misdiagnosis is very common. 52% of individuals with FOP receive an incorrect diagnosis. The journey from symptoms to a correct diagnosis takes an average of 1.5 years for those diagnosed since 2016.

FOP will progress, or get worse, as a person ages. Loss of mobility and range of motion caused by the growth of FOP bone is cumulative and increases over the course of a person’s life with FOP, severely limiting their ability to perform even basic activities of daily living.
Imagine no longer being able to eat your favorite food...FOP bone growth in the muscles of the face and mouth can make a person with FOP's jaws lock making eating extremely difficult.
We've heard a lot about vaccines lately...those with FOP are advised to not receive intramuscular (IM) injections since any injury to a muscle (including an injection) can cause FOP to accelerate progression.
