Parents'
Place
FOP & School – An Overview
While FOP does not affect a person's intelligence or cognitive abilities, it does negatively impact the child's ability to safely access the school premises, use and manipulate the school's materials, and function academically in a typical way. For a detailed discussion of the various issues that may arise in school and the ways others have dealt with them, please click here or go to Chapter 6 of the Overcoming Obstacles catalogue where you will also find other relevant ideas and information.
Parenting a Child With a Disability
We hope that the Parents' Place will develop and grow. For now,
we would like to start by reprinting an edited version of an article
which first appeared in the FOP Connection newsletter, as well as,
some other stories and poems written about parenting a child with
a disability.
Ten
Things I've Learned in Ten Years
"Ten Thing's I've Learned in Ten Years"
is based on a workshop from our Second International Symposium on
FOP and also appeared in the FOP Connection. It was written by Marilyn,
mother of FOP member, Sarah.
Welcome
to Holland
Welcome to Holland is a wonderful essay
written by Emily Perl Kingsley that thoughtfully describes the difficult
experience of learning that your child has a disability. Many families
have found that its point of view has fostered healing and encouraged
optimism.
Always
Have Hope
Always
Have Hope is an inspiration poem written by RoJeanne, mother
of Jasmin, diagnosed with FOP in 1998.
