Flight For The Cure!!

What is FOP?
· FOP replaces healthy muscles with normal bone
· Children with FOP appear normal at birth except for a malformation of the great toe
· Bridges of bone significantly restrict movement
· Trauma, surgery, bumps, falls and intra-muscular injections can result in explosive new bone growth. Any attempt to remove the extra bone accelerates the FOP process
· FOP affects 1 in 2 million people - currently there are only 400 confirmed cases worldwide

Research
· Research is led by Dr. Frederick Kaplan and his team at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School
· Finding multigenerational families where more than one person in the family has FOP is imperative to finding the FOP gene
· Osteoporosis, arthritis, heart valve and spinal cord injuries patients will also benefit from finding a cure for FOP

Pilots Dr. Edwin Galkin and Retired Eastern Airline Pilot Captain Richard Sollner of New Jersey want their flight to help our fight in raising awareness and funds for FOP. Their goal is to fly around the world on a single engine Cessna 210 Centurion for a 27,500-mile, 6-week flight starting on July 3, 2004 . Our goal is to raise funds for each mile they fly.
