Bed Pad – Water & Gel Pad/Topper
One of the IFOPA adults with FOP said the best aid to sleeping was a water/gel filled mattress from Medline that was laid on top your existing mattress. She says, “It was kind of like a water bed which contoured to your sleeping positions, so comfort was good. One drawback was you couldn't heat it like you could a waterbed, but if you put a velour blanket under the sheet it kept the cold out. Another drawback was that after about 1 year it may develop a leak, which wasn't too fun (especially if you discovered it in the middle of the night). If you used the gel (which you added to warm water when you filled it) the leak(s) never amounted to a bad stream....just a small gooy mess at the leak spot...very manageable. The weight of this water/gel mattress [topper] does cause a sagging over time of the mattress its on and it is VERY heavy; it takes at least two people to set it up and position it properly on the bed. It’s not hard to do but it does take some muscle.” Sources/Directions: This Water-Gel Bed Topper can be bought from Medline.
